Problem Solving with the Tarot

My second task of the day was attempting to solve this (rather large) problem:

‘How can I increase my chances of getting Etsy sales?’

I designed my own ‘spread’.. incidentally I don’t tend to arrange cards in a particular way anymore. It seems to make more sense to me just to pull cards as needed – and it’s much simpler!

So.. I would pull four cards to represent the following

1. problem/situation

2. obstacles

3. opportunities

4. extra help

My cards were the Chariot, Ace of Cups, The Hierophant, Princess of Pentacles.

Again, I am using the Tarot Illuminati.

Situation/Problem – The Chariot

Pulling in different ways, need courage and conviction to keep going. Control (or lack of), keeping both horses on the same track. This reminds me that I need to keep focussed and in control. There are times when I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing or why! But how can I address this?

Obstacles – Ace of Cups

Well the Ace of Cups is a lovely card and makes me thing of positive emotions and beauty. How could this be an obstacle? I want to create beautiful things, but that is not enough to get a business going. I am feeling very positive and happy at the moment, could this be a barrier? Maybe I worry about upsetting the applecart a little.. if I push the business side of things maybe I won’t be so happy. I love creating, making art, making books. When the business becomes successful it will be my job and the pressure will be there to perform, and to sell. This could well be something that is holding me back at the moment. If I’m honest with myself, I am probably not pushing for that first sale as hard as I could be. I definitely need to step out of my comfort zone, get involved with the local community – get myself out there!

Opportunities – The Hierophant

OK, he came up last time. A reminder that the local church could be a useful place – around here most community events involve the church in some way. However, it also makes me think of spiritual connections – I am a very spiritual person despite not being attached to a particular religion. Maybe there are opportunities to connect through more spiritual activities. Which leads me to think of the Tarot.. maybe there are some Tarot groups online I could connect with. Perhaps use my knowledge of the Tarot locally somehow. Worth some exploration!

Extra help – Princess of Pentacles

Not immediately sure about this one so did some brainstorming: beautiful material, pentacles, coins, down to earth, money and finances, sun rays, path around the mountains, countryside, open spaces, poppies, earth, Earth.  I was still a little stumped how this could help, apart from the warning to be careful with money – but that is nothing new as I am always conscious of spending at the moment.

I let this one go and came back to it later – my previous exploring led me to a new haberdashery shop in the village (beautiful material!). As well as selling some really useful stuff for bookmaking and crafts, the lady running the shop also has morning groups for various activities, such as papercrafts and needlework.

Its amazing what you can find if you can get yourself out the door…

Using the Tarot for planning and decision making

OK, I had done a SWOT analysis and written an action plan to help me get my business off the ground. I had identified some issues, problems to be solved.. now what?

Well, today I woke up feeling a bit ‘bleugh’ and didn’t really know where to start. So I pulled a card to help… the 7 of pentacles.  I ended up pulling a couple more cards – The Hierophant and Justice.  I used the Tarot Illuminati deck again – my current favourite!

So, the 7 of pentacles.  The man is resting in a blooming garden, but he looks a little lost, in fact he looks how I feel today. He knows there is lots still to do but is not sure what it is. Its as if he doesn’t know what to do next. Well.. behind him there are steps that seem to be leading out of the garden – perhaps he should explore. Staying where he is isn’t going to help.  So perhaps I need to take some time out of my ‘garden’ (studio) and explore.

Where should I go? What should I do today then?  Well, the Hierophant was next, so I wrote down a few words that came to mind when looking at the card: religion, leader, authority, jewels, ornate, napkins, bald heads, robes, lamb, worship, the Church, keys, locked doors, unlocking. My first thought was I could visit a church or religious building… hmm… ok but I’m not particularly religious and wasn’t particularly drawn to that idea. But then I thought of our local community and the monthly pamphlet that the Church distribute called the ‘Williton Window’ – I could look in there for opportunities. And also the local paper.

Further help required! Here is Justice.. seems to be reinforcing the Hierophant with its feeling of authority. Other brainstorming led to scales, balance, sword, green and red, worship, church.. (again!)  Someone really wants to get me to church!

Summary… I need to get out of the house and explore something new, possibly church related!

Action taken.. I bought a copy of the local paper and went through it looking for opportunities.  I found an advert for a haberdashery shop in the village which I didn’t know about (good for book-binding materials!), and…. TADA! An art exhibition in a church in Minehead!   I felt compelled to go there.. the exhibition was lovely, but I think what I was meant to find there was a leaflet advertising auditions for a production of Jesus Christ Superstar next year!

Card of the day – 7 of Swords

Today was a business planning day.. doesn’t sound very exciting does it? But I was brimming with ideas and bits of plans and I felt I needed to sit down and get it all down on paper (well, computer).

So this morning I enlisted the help of the tarot.. the Tarot Illuminati deck to be more precise. It is such a beautiful deck.. sigh.. but more of that later.

I drew a random card to help me.. it was the Seven of Swords. The first thing I do is brainstorm ideas from the images on the card.

So I got:
circus tents
swords, new ideas
carry what you can but leave some behind
you can’t do it all
invisible, secretive, night
circular tents – mandalas
‘Night Circus’ by Erin Morgernstern – the book I’m currently reading
backs turned
dark blues and purples

Looking at the card I felt a very strong connection to the book I’m currently reading, which is Night Circus’ by Erin Morgernstern, through the images on the card. I felt compelled to let the book give me further ideas. I turned to a random page and looked down it until a phrase jumped out at me. I got ‘potential repercussions’ and ‘more than meets the eye’.

So how could I encourage my brain to use all this random information to help with business planning? Hmmmm…

Well to start with, after jotting down my notes I left it for a while and set about my planning. I think the brainstorming with the tarot card pottered around in my brain while I was doing it.

I had been thinking a lot about mandalas – I love doing them and they seem to be very popular – they certainly get the most likes of all of my posts! So my plans include more mandalas and perhaps using them to decorate some journals. The two seem to complement each other well.

The man in the card is carrying a few swords and seems a little concerned that he has to leave some. i have been thinking about how my business needs to be more focussed – there are so many things I want to do, but initially I need to concentrate on what is going to sell! I will need to leave some ideas behind for later. And thats OK, those ideas can be stored somewhere rather tan just discarded on the ground.

There is always ‘more than meets the eye’.. I have come to realise that selling art and craft products requires far more work than merely making the product and sticking it on a website. In fact, I have been so busy with other aspects of setting up a business that I haven’t even set up my website yet 😳 – I am relying on various social media sites for the time being.

Talking of which.. where else can you find me?

I am RadiantMoonArt on Facebook, @radiantmoonart on Twitter and Instagram ( I LOVE instagram!) and RadiantMoonArt on Pinterest, Flickr, Tumblr.. you get the idea!

I’m very excited about my journey and I hope you’ll join me as I bumble along setting up my business and using the Tarot to help me.

Tomorrow I am going to do a full spread with my cards and see what that turns up 😊

Please let me know if you like my blog and if there’s anything you want to ask me about. Art and Tarot are my passions and I love talking about them!

Thanks for reading

Rachel 😊

Reaching for the deck…

I recently reached out for my Tarot cards.. again!

The cards are always there, waiting for me to reach out.

I had a eureka moment! I am trying to set up my business.. an art business… I confess I’m not really business-minded. Well, after reading some of Richard Wiseman’s excellent book ‘Did you Spot the Gorilla?’, I was inspired to start using Tarot cards to help with problem solving. I will explain more later – I’m very excited!

Join me on my journey..?

More soon :o)
